There have been many changes to tennis in the last few years. The biggest is probably Hawk-Eye. Then there is no-ad scoring in doubles, super tie-breaks and on-court coaching. I am opposed to the latter innovation. When it was introduced on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour last year we were told it was designed to create more excitement for fans. I am in favor of anything that enhances the fan experience because, of course, they are the people we play tennis for. But whoever thought about this on-court coaching doesn't seem to have really thought things through. I'm sure it's interesting for spectators to see the communication between a player and a coach, but the way it works is that TV viewers don't even see it during live broadcasts, because almost every station cuts to a commercial during the change of ends. Neither do the spectators in the stadium see or hear it, so I wonder who it actually benefits.

Sure, people can watch the re-runs and see what was said, but I would think that the vast majority of people watching re-runs are tennis fans anyway – again, this goes against their idea of "attracting more fans to the game". But the main reason why I'm against this experiment is because it is only present on the Tour – we can't use it at Grand Slams. Without wishing to be disrespectful to other events, as a player it is the Grand Slams you train for and dream about winning. If we can't use something at a Grand Slam I don't think it should be on the Tour.

The Tour has asked me, and other players, for feedback, and the vast majority of players are against it. It's a slightly strange situation, because I'm against the concept, but at the same time I know it can help me. I don't want to appear like a hypocrite for using it when I don't agree with it, but I would be stupid not to make use of it when it can be beneficial to me as a player. It helped me in Sydney last week in two of my matches. I was panicking a little bit, and having my advisor Sven come onto the court really helped me relax and think more clearly about my tactics. I won the set that followed his advice on both occasions. But I can't use it here. If I lost the first set against Cirstea in the first round on Tuesday I may have used it, had I been able to. My point is that we must not become dependent on something that we cannot use on the biggest stage.

I also really think that tennis should remain a one-on-one sport, with no outside help. As part of the continuation of the experiment the Tour says that they will take a much stricter approach to policing coaching from the stands during matches – I will believe that when I see it. Thankfully, I didn't need any outside help against Srebotnik yesterday. I was very happy with my performance. I feel like it was a high quality match, and the statistics certainly suggest so. It's quite unusual to see a women's tennis match where both players are using slice - she mixed it up very well and made it difficult for me.

Winning my third consecutive match in straight sets gives me confidence and I've achieved my goal of reaching the second week here for the first time. Everything is going very nicely. I'm having a great time. The support I've received this week has been incredible and I don’t want this to end.

Love,

Ana
