How you prepare for a match is extremely important. I've heard people say, "She will easily beat her" or "her ranking is much better, the other girl has no chance" but those statements aren't true – anything can happen. If I prepare properly for a match then I'm confident of beating most players. But if I were to just get out of bed and go straight to the court for the match, I would have little chance.

This actually happened to me once in juniors. My alarm didn't go off and I woke up just five minutes before the tournament car arrived to take me to the site. I was playing someone whom I was expected to beat, but I was flustered, played badly and lost. Getting up in good time is obviously the most important thing, so that you can relax and go through your routine - eating, stretching, warm-up and tactical planning - in good time. For an afternoon match at a Grand Slam, such as today, I will wake up no later than 8am, because part of my preparation is to practice on the same court that my match will be played on. The latest possible time to practice on Rod Laver Arena is 10am, so I will wake up two hours before that, and make sure that breakfast is finished no later than 9am.

Sometimes I have trouble sleeping if I've had a match that day - either because of the excitement or sometimes due to muscle pain. Sometimes the night before a big match I also have trouble, because of nerves and excitement.

Hydration is obviously essential in this heat, and I actually begin the process the day before a match by drinking two or three litres of water in the afternoon and evening. Before my match I will drink another one-and-half litres. My breakfast usually consists of muesli with honey, fresh fruit and juices. The biggest no-no is fried food - I completely avoid it. Sometimes I have to eat even if I'm not hungry, because I know I'll need the energy during my match.

It will be around 3am in the morning in Belgrade but I'm sure my family will be watching when I play Venus. I don't have a good record against her and lost to her at two Grand Slams last year. But I think this new surface, which is a slow hard court, gives me a better chance.

Love,

Ana

Fan questions answered...

I'd like to know what's the meaning of the expression you cry out after a winner. It sounds like "haite or haide" - I can't speak Serbian so I probably wrote it wrong! It sounds nicer than the usual "c'mon" of the other players. – Michele

Ana: It’s "ajde". It means "come on" in Serbian.

Why did you choose to live in Basel? - Vlad, Bucharest

I moved to Switzerland when I was 14 because I had a sponsor there, who helped with my expenses. They went bankrupt, and I then met a Swiss businessman who became my manager, and he also helped with my tennis development. He lived in Basel, and so did many of my old coaches and trainers. I like Switzerland a lot – it is quiet, relaxed and the lakes and mountains are beautiful.

What is your best tennis memory? - Brandon, USA

Ana: There are so many! Instead of listing one of the more obvious ones, I will say that one of my best ever achievements was when I was 16 and playing ITF tournaments. I qualified for two tournaments in a row in Japan and won them both, which meant that I won 16 matches in 15 days. I'm still very proud of that.
